Let us host you for the trip your family deserves: the only place in the US where you can drive on the beach *and* vacation alongside wild horses for a week! Create magical memories to last a lifetime in the northern Outer Banks.
Our home, Sandy Claws NC, is a semi-ocean front home with direct walking access to the beach 25 yards away.
VERY SECLUDED: You need 4WD to drive nearly three miles up a beach road of sand to reach the home.
**No Hidden Fees. Nightly rate covers all basics.**
Known locally as the Christmas House, Sandy Claws NC sat unused for years before we bought it and modernized it in 2021/2022. It’s located three miles up the beach in Corolla, near MM 15.5. Containing 4BRs and 3.5Baths, and a additional sleeping area, the home can sleep up to 10 comfortably.
PROPERTY LOCATION
The home sits at an angle between two other homes (both back decks face north east toward the ocean) to maximize vistas of the water. Appreciate your own private sunrises over the ocean from the back of the home, and later appreciate sunsets from the front deck, setting over the sound side of the island. Truly spectacular visuals you’ll want to capture in a pic.
PROXIMITY TO BEACH
Our back fence post is located less than 25 yards from the dunes — a short trip with our included beach wagon and cooler. You can walk directly, or drive your 4WD car over the nearest dune access point and park directly on the beach, as this area is one of the few remaining in the country that accepts beach driving.
*AWD cars with high clearance can also be used, but you drive them at your own risk. For the best traction while driving on the sand, it’s suggested to air down all tires to 10-15PSI. Your tires won’t pop, they won’t be damaged, but you will be able to drive comfortably on the beach without straining your engine or creating ruts in the beach.
UNIQUE PROPERTY FEATURES
How often can you vacation with adored ones next to a wildlife refuge with wild horses roaming your property? The local harems visit nearly daily, staying away only in inclement weather. Please note, it is illegal to feed the wild horses (it can kill them, no joke) and you must remain 50 feet from them at all times. Allowing them too close to you will eventually cause them to become tame, resulting in their removal from the wild.
STRESS-COMPLIMENTARY VACATION
If you're here for a family vacation and don't want to prepare, a dinner meal service can be arranged with local eateries and caterers who offer catering and delivery to the 4x4 area. Reach out to us for information to organize it direct.
ON-SITE AMENITIES
Sandy Claws caters specifically to families and offers a scavenger hunt for young kids. Additional on-site activities include three intelligent TVs (living room, King Beach, and gaming alcove), many puzzles and games, books, a sand box, a seven-person hot tub, plastic Adirondack and traditional beach chairs and a wagon, a fire pit with eight chairs, tether ball, corn hole, and many more outdoor and indoor games.
REMOTE WORK
Each bedroom is equipped with a 30"x20" fold down laptop desk mounted to the wall, in case someone needs privacy for a work call, project, or school assignment. Despite Brightspeed’s reliable coverage, severe winds and weather can affect signal availability. We've found it is possible to work remotely from the home, as long as Mother Nature cooperates.
RENTAL PREFERENCE
We rent our home to family groups and adult groups over age 25. At least one person in your event must be 25 years old, sign the lease, and be present at the home for the entire duration of the lease. No events or events without prior permission from owners, and no family pets allowed. Bringing your pet to our non-pet home will invalidate your rental agreement and you must board the pet(s) or leave immediately, with no refund.
We may entertain Pet Friendly at a later season, but not at this time, no exceptions, so please don't ask.
To read last season’s reviews, please search for our home site Sandy Claws NC where we are currently offering a 10% off early bird discount for travelers booking six months in advance. No third event costs (online travel agencies like this one charge high “guest service costs” which can be $500-$1500) and we offer a permanent year-round 10% military/first responder/teacher/essential worker discount (discounts can’t be combined) with a four nighttime minimum stay. Our cancellation policy is the exact same no matter where you book, before 60 days you get a full refund. Within 60 days of arrival we can only refund for what we re-rent the property for.

Booking the best Currituck vacation rental experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Currituck area. To get the best vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Currituck attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- Some property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group.
- Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Look for your local Currituck visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Planning and picking a perfectrental home:
- Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Perfect Getaway on a Limited Access Beach with Wild Horses! has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, reach out to the property manager before you book the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- If there's a particular Currituck attraction you crave, browse homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking
Have a great stay:
- Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of problems.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if there is a dispute.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a terrific resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a fantastic vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
