Miles of windswept remote beaches, legendary wild horses, iconic historical sites, rich wildlife, the freshest coastal cuisine and the best sojourn vacation rental homes await you on the beaches of Corolla. The Currituck Outer Banks is a haven for outdoors enthusiasts, especially those who savor water sports and fishing.

When visitors come to Corolla and the Currituck mainland for the first time, they naturally have questions about what to see, where to eat and what to do beyond a day at the beach. These aren’t the only things they ask of us, however. Corolla is a unique destination, home to pristine shorelines and Wild Mustangs. People coming here for spring and summer vacations want to know everything, and we’re happy to tell them.

Here are just a few of the lesser known Qs in the Currituck FAQ:

How Do You Say “Corolla”?
Is it pronounced cah-RAH-lah or co-ROLL-lah? If you’re local, you know the first answer is how we say it. We know the second pronunciation is common when talking about the car of the same name, but in plants, the term “corolla” refers to the collection of petals that strongly displays color and encircles the stamen and pistil of a flower. This version, cah-RAH-lah is the correct pronunciation of our excellent destination.

Is Corolla an Island?
It may seem like Corolla is its own separate island given how visitors from up north have to drive down Highway 158, across the Currituck Bridge, then north on 12 to get here. In actuality, Corolla is more of a “spit” or peninsula bordered on either side by the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. North of town sits the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge, where you are likely to see the Wild Mustangs.

Can You Really Drive on the Beaches There?
Yes! If your car has 4-wheel drive, you can access the 4×4 beaches here. In fact, if you’re renting any of the vacation rental homes on Carova Beach, you’ll need to use the beach access lanes to get there. Please note, the rules for off-road driving and parking have been refreshed for the coming season, so check for current information on obtaining the proper passes.

Getting Around:
A car is required for most tasks.

Tricks and tips for getting the perfect Currituck vacation rental experience:

Getting the best value:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Corolla. Booking your vacation home in the Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Currituck vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Property managers frequently offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local Currituck visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

Make a plan and choose yourvacation home:

  • Begin by selecting your vacation dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Aurora 7 BR Elevator Theater Rec Room, Pool & Hot Tub has 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before booking your rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Is your family looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To make sure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. Make contact with the rental manager right away to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on good reviews to stimulate new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
