Rental booking tips:
How to get the best rental value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the best value, consider changing your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- The sooner you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Reserving your rental up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Currituck visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain coupons for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Filter your rental search:
- Select dates and maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Wags & Waves: New Construction, Dog-friendly, Oceanside Home has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before reserving the home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If there's a specific Currituck attraction you crave, look for properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Know before you go:
- Get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Make a record of any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
